Carl Loewen Varidor Riesling Trocken
The Varidor Riesling Trocken from Weingut Carl Loewen is an entry-level dry Riesling that feels like anything but, embodying the intensity of Germany’s Mosel Valley while maintaining an approachability for both purse and palate. Produced by Christopher and Karl-Josef Loewen, renowned for their commitment to spontaneous fermentation and traditional cellar practices, the Varidor is crafted from younger vines grown on slate-rich soils near Longuich and Leiwen. Fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel and aged on fine lees, the wine is made entirely without added enzymes or commercial yeasts, allowing the vineyards and fruit to speak with purity. On the nose, Varidor offers a lifted bouquet of lime zest, white peach, green apple, and the faint floral edge of elderflower and white tea. Crisp and linear, with a striking acidity that slices through the gentle ripeness of orchard fruit and citrus. A distinct slate-like minerality hums beneath the surface, giving the wine its signature Mosel tension and length. Light on its feet but deeply expressive, with a clean, stony finish that lingers and an ABV hovering around 12%. As an introduction to the Loewen estate or Mosel trocken Riesling more broadly, Varidor punches well above its weight. It’s an excellent companion to shellfish, sushi, or herbed poultry. As an aperitif it is just as enjoyable on its own, especially for lovers of high-acid, terroir-driven whites.
